We helped the team at Nima create an app that engages a community of gluten sensitive food lovers. Using the Nima device and its app, people who have traditionally avoided eating out due to their gluten intolerance are finally empowered to eat without fear.
Their first product is Nima, a pocket-sized sensor that can find traces of gluten in food in about three minutes. The team needed a companion app for iPhone. The app would need to help users manage their Nima sensors, share their test results with the Nima community, and find restaurants with gluten-free food.
The Nima team shared an extensive amount of background information to aid this ideation phase. These materials included survey results showcasing high demand for a companion app, the demographics of Nima’s users, firmware documentation, and the Nima API spec. After this productive time together, the Raizlabs designer team wireframed the major user workflows, while the engineering team investigated hardware integration.
We designed the Nima app so that users could easily manage their Nima sensors, log new tests, and find restaurants that accommodate people with gluten-sensitivities. With those goals in mind, our team included several features: easy guided pairing via Bluetooth, over the air Firmware updates, a universal test score from the community (The Nima Score), map based restaurant search, and easy and automatic food logging.
By engaging with the community, users have the opportunity to learn through both analytics and user-generated reviews. Nima for iOS was a major milestone for the Nima team’s mobile strategy, providing them with a strong foundation to build upon in the future.
Armed with Nima’s BTLE gluten sensor device and the easy-to-use app, users can now explore foods and restaurants without fear and share what they’ve learned with others. The app has helped to foster a community of over 5,000 users eating free of stress.
