Work / Flywheel (iPhone, Apple TV, Connected Devices)

We Put the Pedal to Innovation

Raizlabs collaborated with Flywheel to bring riders the competitive, inspirational atmosphere of the studio right into their own homes while using the Flywheel iPhone app, Fly Anywhere bike, and Apple TV.

The Challenge

Flywheel approached Raizlabs looking for a partner to support an innovative new mission, impact a new industry, grow their brand in new locations and reach even more potential customers as they bring their studio experience into riders’ homes.

The challenge we set out to solve was, how could we bring the unique and incredibly motivating experience of a studio class, into a rider’s personal space?

Initially, the Flywheel and Raizlabs engineering teams collaborated and focused on building an experience which would stream Flywheel classes both live and on-demand to a custom Android tablet attached to the Fly Anywhere bike. The tablet technology overlays the rider’s personal metrics and the class leaderboard over an HD video stream, bringing the competitive element of a studio class into the home. True to the well-known Flywheel Brand, the award winning instructors and quality music can also be found in the Fly Anywhere classes. Once classes were streaming on the tablet, we worked with Flywheel and their engineering team to see what other ways we could leverage hardware and software technologies together to enhance and support the Fly Anywhere experience.

The Build

We continued our partnership with Flywheel by revisiting how we could stream their high-quality content onto a rider’s home theatre system.

There are a few reasons Flywheel riders are so loyal to the brand and the classes–the rigorous competition against other riders, classes led by top-of-the-line, highly motivating instructors, high-quality music creating a party-like atmosphere, class statistics allowing a rider to track their progress, and of course, all of these pieces going together to create an intense and super fun workout. Within days, our team was able to build a proof-of-concept that brought the class experience to users’ home theatre via the iOS app and Apple TV, which we did during one of our innovative Hack Days. We set up a test bike in the Raizlabs office and developers collaborated with the Flywheel engineering team on the iPhone-and-Apple-TV-connection. After many, many hours and sweat (yes, developers sweat for this project), we created the experience we were hoping for. Using the Flywheel app on the iPhone, riders can connect their phone and Fly Anywhere bikes to their Apple TV and stream classes to their living room entertainment systems.

The Outcome

We loved working on this project with Flywheel because it gave us the opportunity to challenge ourselves the way that Flywheel typically challenges its riders.

We are no stranger to coupling fitness and tech (and even built one of RunKeeper’s first apps) and we were excited for the opportunity to build an experience with an app, a connected bike, and an at home, smart entertainment system. Now, Flywheel can create a community of riders to ride anywhere regardless of studio locations or schedules. Users now have the ability to browse and manage their own classes, challenge themselves against other riders and still track progress using performance metrics all from their house. Riders can have access to a personal class whenever and wherever they would like, with Flywheel’s best in class instructors and access to their top of the line content. We believe in making user’s lives better with technology and in the case of this project, that means a little healthier and maybe even a little sweatier through the use of top of the line technology.
