Winning the App Store – Part 1

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

What does it take to make it to the top of the App Store? In this two part post we’ll experiment to see what we can do on a shoestring budget. We wanted to give the developer community and those curious about the world of apps a look under the hood at the numbers of a specific marketing campaign. (Your results may vary)

Part 1 is dedicated to covering the app’s journey through the App Store so far and Part II will release the data pertaining to a recent campaign to help launch an app of ours into the top of iPhone and iPad charts.

Alarm Clock Radio (Free and Paid) has been downloaded over 1.5 million times since launch. The app has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs and has made about $77,000 in revenue to date.  Not bad, but not Angry Bird like. The app has been updated a half dozen times, released, bugfixed and enhanced several times. With each release we fix bugs, address customer issues and generally try to make the app better.

The initial app was released as a paid application. This did well internationally but never broke into the US market. Looking below, you’ll notice a spike and fall that came upon the back of internationalization. Other spikes were the result of press, version updates, experimentation with price and unaccounted for market forces. Our most recent experiment was adding support for the iPad.

The app has not (yet) had the honor of being featured by Apple, however it’s been able to keep a strong following, especially in Japan where the app has been consistently highly ranked.

The experiment we ran was a pure marketing play associated with a popular website called “FreeAppADay.com.”

At the time of this post we’re currently at stage #5 of six. The initial promotion resulted in over 100,000 free downloads on August 31 and the app will switched back to paid after a brief time as free.  We pulled our lite version to funnel downloads to the current promotion.

In terms of “cost per aquisition” or the marketing cost it takes to get one users to try your product.  After just one day the app is currently ranked in the top 10 iPhone free apps and the top 5 iPad Free apps. We measured a little over 109,000 free downloads on August 31.

We expect the cost per acquisition to be under a penny. Obviously this is still not a way to profitability if you’re giving away your product.  The goal of course is to convert this momentum into sales.

In the second part of this post we will release the promotional statistics as well as sales numbers for a glimpse at what the sling-shot looks like and if we’ll see if we can take the app to the top of the paid charts.

2010 Boston International Film Festival Is the First Major Festival to Show An iPhone Application

BOSTON, Massachusetts (April 15, 2010)  - WALKING CINEMA: MURDER ON BEACON HILL is not a film, it’s an iPhone app, but its innovative, lush storytelling earned it a place in the 2010 Boston International Film Festival on April 18th. Based on the PBS film MURDER AT HARVARD, this location-based app is a real-life murder mystery told in short videos that layer over a map of present-day Beacon Hill.  ”We were just blown away at how watchable the story is in a theatrical setting.  It’s quick-paced, full of juicy details, and, to our knowledge, it’s the first location-based application to screen at a film festival,” said Festival Director Patrick Jerome.

WALKING CINEMA: MURDER ON BEACON HILL is a multimedia story of John Webster, a Harvard Professor accused of murdering and dismembering one of Boston’s richest men in 1849. GPS information enables users to conduct their own guided, interactive tour of significant crime scenes throughout Boston.  The director of WALKING CINEMA, Michael Epstein, calls it “a page-turner mystery powered by your feet.”

The application is currently the most and highest rated “walking tour” application in the iTunes App Store and can be previewed at www.parkmanmurder.com. “We’ve seen downloads of the application coming from over 30 countries and we believe that many are viewing it as an armchair mystery while locals and tourists here are walking with the story as hands-on history,” Epstein says.

Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and developed in partnership with Raizlabs in Brookline, MA, Epstein says that one of the goals of the project was to develop a multi-platform film that led to thoughtful engagement with history and geography.

WALKING CINEMA: MURDER ON BEACON HILL will be shown at 8:15 p.m. on Sunday April 18, 2010 at the Boston Common AMC Theater. Tickets are available through the Boston International Film Festival site http://www.bifilmfestival.com/biffschedule.html. The Boston International Film Festival runs from April 16 to April 25, 2010. The festival strives to bring together in Boston local, national and international filmmakers by promoting the world’s most artistic and creative independent and experimental films.

Raizlabs Designs, Develops and Launches a Boston Restaurant Week App in Less Than a Week

BOSTON, Massachusetts (March 15, 2010) – Raizlabs announces that its latest iPhone app, Boston Restaurant Week 2010, is now available in the iTunes store less than a week after development began.  Boston Restaurant Week features the addresses, locations (by street address and GPS coordinates) and event menus of all 207 participating restaurants. It even places a call for reservations or offers directions at the press of a button.  The Boston Restaurant Week app sells for $0.99, the minimum price in Apple’s tiered pricing system.  Boston’s Restaurant week is March 14-19 & 20-25, 2010.

Raizlabs developed a content framework enabling developer Justin Kaufman and designer Dave Counts to begin working on the app on a Tuesday and submit the app for approval by Apple before 5PM the following Friday. “I was in New York on Monday demonstrating features of RZContent to publishers when I got an email from Justin about getting started,” said Counts. “Even with an imminent and absolute deadline, the framework let us keep business hours, not developer hours.”

Raizlabs founder Greg Raiz first suggested the project at a morning meeting on Friday, March 5. “We kicked it around,” said Raiz, “But everyone’s schedule was already full. Ultimately, we decided that’s what made it a perfect test for the framework. It’s supposed to make development fast and easy.”

“The great unknown was Apple’s approval cycle,” said Kaufman. “If Apple didn’t approve the app, and quickly, it would have been more an exercise than a product. “Fortunately, we’ve shipped enough apps to know how to avoid rejection and our reputation probably expedited things.”

Boston Restaurant Week is available in the app store on iTunes for $0.99:

New Mother Goose App Included Children of Company Founder, Animator in Its Design Process

BOSTON, Massachusetts (February 19, 2010) – Raizlabs announces the release of Mother Goose Classic, its kid-tested, Apple-approved nursery rhyme application. Mother Goose Classic features interactive versions of nine beloved rhymes with original animation and music including Humpty Dumpty, Jack Be Nimble, Jack & Jill, Hickory-Dickory-Dock, Little Miss Muffet, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Hey-Diddle-Diddle, This Little Piggy and Pat-A-Cake.

The process wasn’t easy. Raizlabs developed its own technology to display interactive animation as part of a broader, designer-friendly content framework for the iPhone. The iPhone famously does not support Flash animation. “I’m really excited about this project, not only because I’m a dad and my daughter loves this app but because it opens up so many possibilities for interactive storytelling,” said Gregory Raiz, founder of Raizlabs.

Animator Dave Counts said “My son and I regularly visit kids’ sites together, but watching him respond to something I helped create was incredibly satisfying. I was working for him as much as I was working for Raizlabs.”

Humpty Dumpty aft the fallRaizlabs’ Mother Goose Classic is available in the iTunes store. The price is set at $3.99. A free version featuring three complete, animated nursery rhymes has also been approved by Apple.

Apple Eases Controls on iPhone App Development

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Wade Roush, lead author for Xconomy sits down with Raizlabs founder Gregory Raiz to discuss recent changes in the Apple review process and what this means for application developers and authors.

Developer blogs and the Twittersphere started to buzz last week with some remarkable news: some new iPhone apps were getting approved much faster, sometimes within a single day… Apple hasn’t said anything publicly about the changes, but it appears that the company is making a conscious effort to simplify and speed up the app approval process. For more about the recent changes, I contacted Greg Raiz, the founder of Raizlabs, a Brookline, MA-based software development house that specializes in iPhone applications.
